Lot #32/10 Cape travels, 1777 to 1786 by Robert Jacob Gordon .... edited by Peter E. Raper & Maurice Boucher. One of the most important travel accounts of South Africa in the 18th century. Not previously published, this is in my opinion the most important Africana travel account published in the 20th century. Gordon was a Hollander who made five journeys into the interior, further than any white explorer at that time. He named the Orange River and discovered its mouth. Famed for his mapping of the interior, he applied his varied scientific knowledge to his description of geology, geography, tribal peoples (Khoikhoi, San, Tswana & Xhosa), fauna & flora. Beautifully illustrated with scenery, people, animals & plants, this is a very valuable addition to any Africana travel collection. "Brenthurst Second Series" #4 & #5. Only 1000 copies were published. Johannesburg, Brenthurst Press, 1988. First edition. Two volumes. 4to. Cloth. Dust jackets. Pp. 225,(1) + (227)-465,(1), colour plates, colour portraits, colour maps. Dust jackets protected by wrap-around plastic. VG. Reserve price: R2500.00 bids welcome [
