Lot #13/12 In Africa: hunting adventures in the big game country by John T. McCutcheon. On invitation by famous taxidermist Carl Akeley, the author, a cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune," spent 4 months attached to the President Roosevelt hunting safari in East Africa. Much of the text & cartoons previously appeared in the newspaper, however all of the photos are previously unpublished. The photos include outstanding portraits of tribal people, whilst the cartoons add humour to the text. Certainly one of the most unusual hunting books, with numerous humorous anecdotes, together with the usual hunting experiences. Also quite funny, are the descriptions of the author's journey out, together with the homeward journey, via the East. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1932. Inscribed on recto of the frontispiece: "To Mary B. Powell, with the very best wishes of her friend, the "author" - John T. McCutcheon - December 1910." . Indianapolis, Bobbs-Merrill Company, Publishers, 1910. First edition. 8vo. Cloth. Pp. (xi,i),402, photo-plates, tinted cartoon illustrations. Recased, original spine laid down, spine titles faded, cloth slightly rubbed, part of title on front cover faded, hinges neatly strengthened internally, end-papers soiled, previous owner's signature on front paste-down, inscription by the author, page-edges lightly stained. This is a case where the book is probably too heavy for its binding & quite frequently copies need to be recased. Good. Reserve price: R1450.00 bids welcome
