Lot #13/28 Map South Africa from Official and other authentic authorities. A fine, colour printed lithographed map on a single sheet of white paper, centre vertical fold (removed from an atlas). Size: 41 cm x 52 cm, partly coloured. Inset of “The Peninsula of the Cape” below left (size: 14 cm x 8 cm), lightly coloured. Above right & left no. “65.” Drawn & engraved at Stanford’s Geographical Establishment, London. This map has particularly good detail on the eastern Cape (showing in particular the villages founded by the German Legion in the area of Kaffraria (1856), also shown are the many mission stations in that area, as well as in the eastern Free State, Basutoland & southern Namibia. Already by this time, far more accurate names of places, tribes, states, etc. are shown. Interestingly, a well established place such as Potchefstroom is still incorrectly spelled: Potscherf Stroom. Kroonstad is called Cronstad and there is no Bloemfontein. Schoemansdal in the Zoutpansberg is called a "Boer's Town."A very attractive, detailed map of Southern Africa from as far north as Lake ‘Ngami. NORWICH map #203 gives an incorrect date of c. 1870-1872. Edinburgh, A. Fullarton & Co., (c. 1858). This is a vintage map, dating from over 150 years ago. Nicely framed in a solid wood frame, double-mounted, glazed with clear glass. Some light browning, small tear in bottom margin appears to have been repaired.
