Lot #15/21 Reminiscences of life in South Africa from 1846 to the present day [volumes 1 and 2] by Joseph Millerd Orpen. An important book of recollections of major incidents in the history of South Africa in the second half of the 19th century. Orpen was a farmer, hunter, family man & public servant in the Cape, Free State & Natal. He was a land surveyor in Cape, Free State & Rhodesia, Lieutenant in a volunteer unit during frontier wars in eastern Cape. He was the first Free State ambassador to Moshesh & became a Cape Parliamentarian in 1871. He was friend & advisor to Sir George Grey & Rhodes among others.
