Lot #16/25 By Rustenburg, Tvl. [etching] 1921 by H. Anton Aschenborn. An original etching by a master of the art, showing a dry riverbed, with trees alongside and two kopjes in the distance. Signed as above & dated in pencil below the etching. Size of etched surface: 9.5 cm x 15 cm (size of sheet of paper 19 cm x 29 cm), unframed. Title: ”By Rustenburg, Tvl.” in ink at the bottom of a plain mount. On reverse at top: “Sonder raam 12/6 Unframed …. Geraam 15/- Framed” Mount has browned. Hans Anton Aschenborn was a German born farmer & artist, who came to Southern Africa in 1909 at age 21 & bought a farm in SWA in 1912. He lost most of his assets during the First World War & moved to Stellenbosch, where he mingled with the Afrikaner intelligentcia. He befriended Sangiro, Grosskopf & Pierneef, illustrating the former two writer’s books. He also published books & prints of his own. Regarded as a pioneer of the realistic portrayal of wildlife & influential on such artists as C.T. Astley Maberley & Zakkie Eloff. When I was a young man & new in the book trade in Pretoria in the 1970s, I met & knew Hans Jürgen Aschenborn, then Director of the State Library. He was a son of Hans Anton Aschenborn. VG.
