Lot #20/08 De Promontorio Bonae Spei .... The Cape of Good Hope: a Latin oration delivered in the Hamburg Academy, 10 April 1767 by Gysbert Hemmy, from Africa .... translated and edited by K.D. White, Professor of Classics, University of Natal .... with additional notes by G.S. Nienaber & D.H. Varley. English translation (with the Latin original) of what is most likely the first speech by a South African born person in Europe. Hemmy described the discovery of the Cape, the countryside & the Hottentots. Largely based on Peter Kolb, Astley & Prévost, three books which depicted the Cape & its people during the 18th century. Cape Town, South African Public Library, 1959. First edition thus. 8vo.
