A descriptive catalogue of all the known species occurring south of the 28th parallel of south latitude by Edgar Leopold Layard. The major 19th century book on South African birds. The information was quite accurate and includes references to Le Vaillant as well as anecdotal observations by the author or friends, explorers, etc. (including James Chapman, Richard Burton, Charles John Andersson).This book was printed in Cape Town and this specific copy was specially bound in half-leather by Saul Solomon & Co, interleaved with a blank leaf between each page of text. This copy belonged to Colonel Jack Vincent (with his pencil signature & date 1937 & book-plate on paste-down), noted African ornithologist and many years Director of the Natal Parks Board. There are occasional neat notes in pencil by Vincent on the blank leaves and a couple in ink by the first owner (Ed. N. Prince ?). Cape Town, J.C. Juta, 1867. First edition. 8vo. Half-leather. Pp. xvi,382,ii,xxi, frontispiece. The boards have become detached, covers worn, some light foxing, but good internally. Reserve price: R590.00 bids welcome
