Lot #7/21 Some account of George Grey and his work in Africa by Sir Alfred Pease, and others. This is the only book about an Englishman who lived, worked & fought in Rhodesia, served as Special Commissioner in Swaziland (where he undertook a survey that took him to all parts of that country). He died as the result of a mauling by a lion in East Africa, whilst on a lion hunt, with among others Alfred Pease (famous for his Book of the lion). Pease wrote the foreword to this book of tributes by colleagues of Grey as well as the chapter on the hunt. An extremely rare & quite important item of Africana. Contains book-plates of I.& F.W. Hosken (famous Africana collector), as well as that of Huw Jones, former Swaziland expert. Listed in HOSKEN, p. 88. This copy was lot no, 784 on the Sotheby’s auction of the Hosken library in 2001, which I purchased for R900.00 and sold on to Huw Jones. Hosken had previously paid 150.00 pounds. London, Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. First edition. 8vo. Quarter-leather. Pp. v,119,(1), frontispiece (portrait), map. Spine a bit rubbed, end-paper creased. VG.
