Lot #8/05 MAP. A map of the extratropical part of Southern Africa by William J. Burchell …. engraved by Sidney Hall. A large map of part of Southern Africa, steel engraved on a single sheet of paper, numerous folds (the map has been extracted from the first volume of his Travels in the interior of Southern Africa). Size: 82.5 x 70 cm. Uncoloured (apart from Burchell’s route in red).  On the map he named many of the places where he stopped or over-nighted, sometimes naming the farmer or giving the Hottentot derivation. He travelled as far as what later became Kuruman Mission Station. The map shows Southern Africa from the Gariep River in the north-west to the Keiskama in the east & north of Kuruman at the top. He spent some years exploring & collecting botanical, zoological & geological samples. This is one of the most important maps of Southern Africa. Burchell, often regarded as the most important scientific traveller in South Africa, was a perfectionist who attempted to impart information as accurately as possible. The map was very influential at the time, containing a number of new names & features and influencing the Southern African maps of Sidney Hall & Arrowsmith. A number of birds , animals & plants have been named after him. Only 750 copies of volume 1 of the book were published and most maps will be found in the book, leaving only a small number available for sale separately. Although it was folded, this is an attractive map, nicely framed in a broad, dark-wood frame, glazed with clear glass. Would make a fine decorative piece for a lodge, or study. NORWICH Maps of Africa, no.189. London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1822. First edition. There may be some restoration on the reverse of the map, but nothing that can be seen from the front. One or two very small tears at folds, some slight browning, but a clean, undamaged example. VG.. We will not be able to export this map in its frame.
