Here is our second auction of 2022.  I am semi-retired and I intend putting out three of four auctions a year, with material from stock or acquired from “old” customers.

These auctions will not be sophisticated or technological. I think that most of you have worked with me by email on my low technology auctions since about the beginning of the third 1000 years and we have built our supplier/customer game that many of you enjoy playing. This auction follows on from the first auction this year. I had trouble with Mailchimp and most of you did not receive the attachment containing the auction, for which I apologize. I am sending auction two as part of the body of the email and if you wish to bid, please do so by email [Gmail please] or sms. I have included about half of the books on auction one, again on this auction as many of you did not see the previous auction.

This auction has a number of “job lots” with two or more books in a lot which I hope will be enticing. Subjects covered include Central Africa [Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi], Anglo/Zulu War, travel, nature, reference and cooking. The auction begins immediately and finishes @ 7pm SA time on Tuesday 26 July. Please don’t inundate me with multiple bids @ 5 to 7 when the auction ends as I have to enter all bids manually. Also remember that we no longer use SA Post Office so all books are couriered – request a quote for delivery when you place your bids.

Lot #22/C5 Auf dem Reitochsen quer durch südwestliche Afrika: Missionar Schmelen ein Pionier der Sprache der Nama (1811-1848) am Oranje, in Bethanien, Steinkopf und Komaggas by Walter Moritz. A biography of Johann Hinrich Schmelen, a migratory pastor, among the earliest in southern Namibia. The pastors / missionaries were known to ride oxen from time to time. He worked mainly among the Nama & married a Nama woman, Zara, with whose help he translated, among others, the Gospel into the Nama language. Lot #22/C10 An eloquent picture gallery: the South African portrait photographs of Gustav Fritsch, 1863-1865edited by Keith Dietrich & Andrew Bank. The photos taken by Fritsch, when as a young man (who had recently qualified as medical doctor and anthropologist), he travelled through the Transvaal photographing the native people. Lot #22/C12 Africana Society of Pretoria …. #1 #2 #3 #13 #16 #19. Pretoria, the Society, 1975 – 2002. Six issues of this quite successful publication, with articles on aspects of South African history, although articles on Pretoria and the surrounding area are more readily accommodated. Each book is bound in printer wrappers, & has between 58 & 150 pages, usually with black / white illustrations. Light browning. VG. Lot #22/C13 James Ewart’s journal covering his stay at the Cape of Good Hope (1811-1814) & his part in the expedition to Florida and New Orleans (1814-1815) with an introduction by A. Gordon Brown. Ewart was a Scottish officer whos spent some time at the Cape & subsequently a few months at New Orleans attempting to capture the city from the Americans. Lot #22/05 The last Zulu Warrior by David Clammer. This book has the most impressive collection of illustrations put together on the Anglo-Zulu War. Collected from many sources and including some original oil paintings and many specially reproduced for this volume, and including the magic lantern slides of the Anglo-Zulu War. A fairly brief text gives an account of all the battles as well as the death of Prince Napoleon. This book was printed in a limited edition of only 1000 copies, of which this is no. 562 and it will not be reprinted. Has become quite difficult to find. Cape Town, Purnell & Son, 1977. Lot #22/C21 What happened to a V.C. by Patricia D’Arcy. An obscure book, published by a great grand daughter who describes the participation of various family members including one, a soldier of the Frontier Light Horse who fought in eastern Cape frontier wars and the Anglo/Zulu War.
