Lot #10/16 Profit and sport in British East Africa: being a second edition, revised and enlarged, of “A colony in the making” by Capt. the Lord Cranworth. The first half of the book deals with tribal people, farming, trade, industry, settlers, administrations, etc., the second half deals with big game hunting, bird shooting, fishing, etc.. There are also chapters on cost of living, the railways, & World War 1 in East Africa. The previous edition called “A colony in the making,” published before World War 1, is a far smaller book, with only limited information. CZECH, p. 69; HOSKEN, p. 52. The inscription & signature on the end-paper is possibly that of Lord Cranworth, but I have nothing to compare it with. London, Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1919. First edition with this title. 8vo. Decorative cloth. Pp. xvi,503, colour frontispiece, plates, maps (1 folding). Spine darkened, titles faded, frayed at head & foot, edges rubbed, titles & picture on front cover still quite clear, front inner-hinge split & restored, previous owner’s signature, inscription on end-paper, some foxing.
